CANU SEIZES A QUANTITY OF CANNABIS AT BAKERSHOP DAM #75 VILLAGE, CORENTYNE On Thursday, 10th April 2025, CANU officers acting on information received conducted an operation at a residence located at Bakershop Dam #75 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. A subsequent search of the residence revealed a quantity of cannabis, which weighed 100 kilograms. Two (2) persons are currently in custody assisting with investigations.

CANU CLARIFIES NON-INVOLVEMENT IN RECENT OPERATION WITH THE GUYANA REVENUE AUTHORITY Contrary to recent social media reports, the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) wishes to categorically state that it was not involved in any operation at the residence of businessman Azruddin Mohamed or his father, Nazar “Shell” Mohamed, in collaboration with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) or independently.   The circulation of such misinformation is misleading and irresponsible. CANU advises members of the public to verify facts with official sources before sharing unconfirmed information.   The Unit remains committed to transparency and upholding the law without fear or favour.

TRIAL UPDATE: MARK BARCLAY Please be informed that on Wednesday, 19th March 2025, Mark Barclay appeared before Magistrate Hardy at the No.51 Magistrate’s Court, where he pled guilty to the offense of possession of 18 grams of cannabis and 131 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. He was sentenced to three (3) years and four (4) months imprisonment. Barclay was arrested following an operation conducted by CANU Officers at a residence in Orealla Village, Region 6, where a quantity ofcocaine and cannabis was uncovered.  The Unit remains resilient in its commitment to preventing the flow of narcotics throughout the country. We continue to work diligently to uphold our mandate and ensure the safety and well-being of our communities.

TRIAL UPDATE: CLEMENT VANDECRUZ Please be informed that on Friday 24th January, 2025 Clement Vandecruz appeared before Magistrate Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrates Court where he was sentenced to two (2) and six (6)months imprisonment together with a fine of GYD $3,429,000 for the offence of possession of2.286kg of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

TRIAL UPDATE: SHEM PERSAUD AND MARIA WARRICK On January, 24th, 2025, Shem Persaud and Maria Warrick appeared before Magistrate Wilson at the Vigilance Magistrates Court. Shem Persaud pleaded guilty, and Maria Warrick pleaded not guilty to the offense of possession of 8.162kg of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. Bail was refused for both Warrick and Persaud, and they were both remanded to prison until February 10, 2025.

CANU INTERCEPTS MOTOR VEHICLE CARRYING A BRICK-LIKE PARCEL CONTAINING A QUANTITY OF COCAINE On Thursday, 9th January 2025, CANU Officers, acting on information received, conducted an operation at Mittleholzer Street North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, where they intercepted a Toyota Mini Bus bearing license plate number BAE 7328. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed one (1) brick-like parcel containing a quantity of cocaine. Wendez Pompey, age twenty-four (24) years old, who is a market vendor of lot 23 Hill Street Albouystown, was arrested and escorted to CANU’s headquarters along with a quantity of cocaine, which weighed 1.156kgs. Investigations are ongoing.

TRIAL UPDATE: WENDEZ POMPEY PLEADED NOT GUILTY, REFUSED BAIL, MATTER AJOURNED UNTIL 21ST FEBRUARY, 2025 On Friday, 10th January 2025, Wendez Pompey appeared before Magistrate Azore at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded not guilty to possession of 1.1562 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. He was refused bail, and the matter was adjourned until 21st February 2025.

CANU SEIZES A QUANTITY OF COCAINE AT THE CHEDDI JAGAN INT. AIRPORT (CJIA) On Thursday, 5th December 2024, CANU officers—while performing duties at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), including conducting routine searches on several persons—discovered a quantity of cocaine strapped to the body of a female Aviation Security Officer attached to CJIA.’ Keesha Greene, age twenty-nine (29) years old, an Aviation Security Officer attached to CJIA of Lot 5 Grant Road, Soesdyke, E.B.D., was arrested and escorted to CANU’s headquarters along with a quantity of cocaine, which weighed 2.152 kgs. Follow-up investigations led to the arrest of Shaquille Thompson, age twenty-eight (28) years old, an Airport Security Officer attached to CJIA of Lot 5 Grant Road, Soesdyke, E.B.D., and the discovery of an additional quantity of cocaine that weighed 2.134 kg, thus amounting to a total of 4.286 kg of cocaine. Investigations are ongoing.

Lennox Gowen Arrested and Escorted to CANU Headquarters with Suspected Narcotic

Lennox Gowen Arrested On Monday, November 18, 2024, CANU Officers conducted a narcotic operation at the Eno Backtrack Service in Springlands, Corentyne, Berbice, which led to the discovery of a whitish powdery substance, suspected to be cocaine, concealed within false walls of a black suitcase. Further investigations led to the arrest of a 44-year-old businessman. Lennox Gowen, of 572 Avocado Street, Ruimveldt, Georgetown, who is also known as “Nunkie”, was arrested and escorted to CANU Headquarters, along with the suspected narcotic. The substance tested positive for cocaine, with a total weight of 3.8 kilogrammes (approximately 8.38 lbs.) Investigations are ongoing.
